This was an extremely interesting read that deserved 5 stars but I couldn't give it 5 because there were a few mistakes that jolted me out of the story. One example is that tensile steel became tinsel steel. Proof reading is a must for me and it doesn't matter if the author is self published or published with a well known publisher- it has to be accurate and not jerk me out of my reading.Having said that the characters were so interesting and different at the same time. The topic matter was so different and unique to anything I had read for a while, being about various torture devices and their use in medieval times and of course now in the present. It was also about a woman who just seems to attract would be rapists and serial killers and even manages to kill some of them! It really shows psychopaths and mentally fractured people in a different light and on the trail of a serial killer. Aislinn is such a fascinating character and I would love to learn more about Malachi and his secrets as well as learn more about the rest of the team! Definitely worth picking up!

This is an engrossing book, and fun to read. I did not want to put it down. There was a great deal of backstory about the US Marshals, especially Aislinn Cain and her dysfunctional friends and odd family. The author, Hadena James, decided to go with the theory that to catch a murderous monster criminal, you have to be just as crazy as the criminal. It’s been done before, but this makes for interesting characters and room for lots of plot development, which we have here.
I learned more about medieval torture devices than I ever thought I would. The descriptions are detailed and precise, with explanations of what they look like, how they are built, and how they are used to torture people. It was interesting to finally get a good description of what a Scavenger’s Daughter is and how it works. Every other author I’ve read just glossed over that. And I had no idea that short spikes were better than long spikes in an Iron Maiden. While this sounds a little morbid, the technical descriptions added to the reality of the story, and put the reader in the shoes of the detectives, describing what they were up against.
The story is written from the perspective of the Marshals , with Aislinn as the main character. As we meet each one, we begin to learn about their personalities, their history, and what drives them to do this fascinating, but ultimately soul-sucking job. We do learn something about the bad guys, but by focusing on the detectives we see how lonely and all consuming their chosen line of would can be. The tension in the story was intense as the Marshals try to anticipate the serial killer's next moves, and discover what is their end-game.
I highly recommend Tortured Dreams by Hadena James to fans of detective work, mass murders, and the intense chase to stop them before they kill again.
I actually read this book years ago, even won signed copy and other gifts. When the author mentioned a vacation and unable to load a new book she read one of her own as a consumer would. Rather then being hooked to grammar, plot lines being fluid and having it all come together making sense. Having a rough time I thought why not go back and reread.
I can not tell you how I laughed at things I had forgotten about this book, being able to laugh at them again really cheered me up.
I will never look at a bathroom again without a smile, and every gal needs a Trevor in her life just to remind us Barbie's are best left for little girls, because Women can stand upright. Even when life pulls you in many directions at the same time.
I have the whole series but having read this in a day, I think I'll just skip to the end and read it and her other series as refreshers. Me James you are still one of my favorite authors and I am so glad even as a Indie writer you are still simply one of the best.
I cannot express how amazing this book is. The main character, who speaks in first person, is a sociopath. As I was reading and she was telling me about herself, her voice started to come to life in my head. This is not uncommon for me in a first person story, but what was uncommon was that she had the voice of a sociopath. It frightened me. The more I read, the worse it got. I had to physically put it down and stop reading until I could get the voice out of my head before I could start reading it again. The author was that good at capturing the voice of her character. Thankfully I was able to "reset" the character's voice and keep reading. I read a lot of crime themed books, it's not unusual for me to read about horrific, scary, murderous characters, but none has ever had a voice so distinct and void of emotion as Ace took on initially. Huge kudos to Ms. James for being able to accomplish that.
The story itself was equally fascinating. I devoured the book in one sitting. The characters are all completely believable. Each is flawed in their own way, making them very human and relatable. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. All of the books are amazing. I don't want to give anything away because getting spoilers sucks, so I won't say much more. If you enjoy FBI type, crime fighting type, serial killer type books, you will love this. Definitely pick it up and be prepared to grab the next eight as well!
